You know all those adages our parents and grandparents, and aunts and uncles handed down over the years, the ones that made us look at them like they didn’t understand life? At the time we were too young to understand that these sayings are so timeless because they’re true.
I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but it wasn’t until I turned 50 that I began to question these old truisms and ask myself if they panned out.
For example:
This too shall pass. Four short words that together make a perpetually true statement. The problem is we don’t know this until after whatever “it” is has passed. But when we actively think back to some of the worst times in our lives we realize that are, in fact, in the rearview.
Don’t burn your bridges. If you’re of a certain age with a bunch of life experience behind you, you’ve probably confirmed this to be true a few times. As someone who has needed to go back over a few bridges in her lifetime, I’m always so glad there’s still one there to cross.
and
Nothing good happens after midnight. This one I’m on the fence about. I understand the spirit in which it’s intended, but has this actually been corroborated? I haven’t been up past midnight in what seems like years so I don’t feel qualified to come down on either side of this long-held truth.
But if good things do happen after midnight I can totally work a nap into my day.
I hope you’re having a great holiday season. It was a very different holiday for me and mine—so many changes.
For that reason, I didn’t do too much decorating. Usually, I do the most, and I did the least this year.
See you in the new year.
Sincerely writing,
Zoey
